Elizabeth reigns supreme

I went to see Elizabeth:The Golden Age on Friday night. It was a bit of a treat, as the theatre was almost empty and I could immerse myself right into the film. DISCLAIMER: I did not do my prerequisite Wikipedia homework, so if I don't comment on the accuracy of the history, don't hold it against me. We are not looking at the Facts, just the Feelings. And I do think the Spanish got the bum rap, I'm a bit suspicious that the Royal Family bankrolled this one, aren't you? Further, I'm generally not a fan of Hollywood bending historical fact to "make a better film" as there are too many that will take this as a history lesson instead of the allegory it's meant to be.

So there's me and my water and my lil bag of chocolate almonds, ready to be swept away. It was lush and epic, a historic film where you wish you could have experienced those times, for the fashion alone. (we could debate the comfort of corsets now, but geez they look pretty). Kate's costumes were amazing, especially the wild wigs with the feathers sticking out on top and the fabrics! Kate's lady-in-waiting, Bess, always wore the same colours, so it was delightful to see their matching outfits. Bess (Abbie Cornish) is soooo pretty, just young and sweet, but also sly for the queen and very smart. Just like a creamy buttercup, so of course when (WARNING: SPOILER) she makes out with Mr. Clive Owen, the film got Very Interesting, indeed. I really started paying attention then. He was the perfectly scruffy gentleman captain-of-the-ship in this film, I understand what the fuss is all about now. It was a perfect portrait of how we need each other, and how honesty and openness are the things that allow us to connect. I know that sounds a bit trite and obvious, but watch the film and you will see what I mean.

The movie had just the right amount of gore too, for the times, not something I seek out in a film, but it did make it authentic. Perfectly grungy really, when it had to be. I wasn't expecting much when I chose the film, and I must say I was impressed by the performances, Kate as usual was mesmerizing, and everyone else pulled the strings they had to to get the job done. Three and a half stars, with a five for Clive. ;)
